Your Veins, Workhorses of the Circulatory System

Varicose veins are unsightly, but even more bothersome is the heaviness you experience in your legs and the swelling in the feet and legs as a result of the varicose veins. Helping the circulation in your legs can help reduce the appearance of varicose veins as well as help your legs feel better and increase your enjoyment of life.

Your veins and arteries work hard carrying oxygen rich blood to your body and returning the oxygen depleted blood back to your heart and lungs. The arteries carry the oxygen rich blood, but it is the lowly veins that are the workhorses of the circulatory system. They work hard against gravity to pump the blood back to the heart.

As our body ages, increased weight, long hours of standing or sitting in one position, hormone changes during pregnancy as well as heredity factors can bring about changes in the one-way valves in the veins. The changes keep the one-way valves from closing properly and allow the blood to leak back into the lower extremity and pool resulting in swelling.

One way to counteract the aging process is with gradient compression. First and foremost this is non-invasive and as simple as putting on a pair of gradient compression socks or stockings. A simple explanation of gradient compression is that a stocking or sock applies compression to the legs. The pressure is greatest at the ankle and gets less as the you move up the leg. The compression works with the muscles of the leg to act as a secondary pump (secondary to the heart) to move the blood back to the heart.

The length of the socks or stockings which you need is dictated by where you are having problems in the leg. Sometimes a knee high is adequate, but sometimes a thigh high or waist high garment is necessary. With the technology which is available now, you can hardly tell by looking that these are “special” socks or stockings. They are fashionable, durable and look great.

As you wear these stockings they reduce the size of the veins in the ankles and feet and help return the blood to the heart. Most important, they help alleviate swelling in the legs and feet and your legs feel energized.

Remember, being compliant with wearing your Jobst, Mediven, Sigvaris, or Juzo compression stockings and support hose is the key to keeping your legs and body healthy. Thank you for shopping with Support Hose Plus.
